Kenya Protests Live News: More Protests Expected After Finance Bill Passes | News

On Tuesday, thousands of people joined the youth-led demonstration in Nairobi to demand that lawmakers vote against the bill, amid rising tensions over a cost of living crisis in the country.

But lawmakers voted in favor of the bill, and some then fled the chamber as demonstrators entered Kenya’s parliament complex. Parts of the parliament building were set on fire.

Several people were killed after police shot live ammunition at protesters.

Police eventually managed to clear the protesters from the building amid clouds of tear gas and the sound of gunfire. Lawmakers were evacuated through underground tunnels, local media reported.

At least five people were killed and 31 others injured, the Kenya Medical Association and several other NGOs said in a statement on Tuesday.
