Kyle Larson will likely miss NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600

Rain delayed the start of the Indy 500; NASCAR Playoff Implications

Kyle Larson is currently in Indianapolis, Indiana. He is about to make his first start in the Indy 500.

Tonight he was scheduled to race in the Coca-Cola 600. The NASCAR Cup Series race takes place under the lights at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

However, rain showers have moved into the Indianapolis area, delaying the start of the race. That has also caused a conflict.

Hendrick Motorsports stated: “Despite the rain delay, Kyle Larson will start the Indianapolis 500.”

The Indy 500 has yet to drop the green flag. But starting the Coca-Cola 600 is now impossible.

Justin Allgaier has been selected as the No. 5 backup driver for tonight’s NASCAR race.

There is a small chance that rain will also fall in the North Carolina region. There too, a delay would be the only chance, short of leaving Indianapolis early, for Larson to get to the start of the race.

Consequences for the play-offs

Kyle Larson has already qualified for the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs. However, the rules state that a driver must compete in every event to qualify.

NASCAR rulebook:

“Unless otherwise authorized by NASCAR, driver(s) and team owner(s) must start all current season championship events to be eligible for the Playoffs.”

“If a starting position has not been earned, the driver(s) and team owner(s) must have attempted to qualify, at the discretion of the Series Managing Director, for the race.”

Hendrick Motorsports will apply for a waiver for Larson to qualify.
