Here’s when and where the great cicada emergence will occur in MA

A hot news item in the media lately is the current emergence of cicadas in the Midwest and Southeast. One of the main reasons for all this coverage is the fact that 13-year-old Brood XIX and 17-year-old Brood While 2024 will be remembered for many things, this year will certainly go down in history as an extremely rare double-breeding year.

Cicadas will be popping up in Massachusetts and it’s not that far yet

Although Massachusetts is not one of the seventeen states experiencing a cicada emergence in 2024, the Bay State will get its share of cicadas next year. Brood XIV will be released in thirteen states, including Massachusetts, in the summer of 2025.

Where in Massachusetts will the cicada rise occur in 2025?

Although crickets are not typically attracted to sandy beaches, numerous online sources have reported that a brood of insects will emerge in Cape Cod. It has been noted that one of the reasons for Cape Cod’s upcoming rise could be the type of forest trees found in the area. Traditionally, crickets thrive in forests and soil. Despite its sandy beaches, Cape Cod apparently has the “right” conditions for a cicada outbreak.

Are cicadas dangerous?

According to the EPA, crickets are not harmful to people, pets, gardens or crops. The most damage they do to you is to get on your nerves with their loud noises, the noise grown men make when they are courting.

Benefits of crickets

The EPA also reports that crickets provide a number of environmental benefits, including the following:

  • Cicadas are a valuable food source for birds and other predators.
  • Cicadas can aerate lawns and improve water filtration in the soil.
  • Cicadas add nutrients to the soil as they decompose.

Although many areas of Massachusetts, such as Boston or Worcester, will not experience the cicada emergence until 2025, if you want to witness the cicada outbreak in Massachusetts next summer, make plans to head to Cape Cod. A word of caution to the wise: you may want to bring noise-canceling headphones.
