RALEIGH, NC (WTVD) — An iguana was found wandering around a Raleigh neighborhood Tuesday evening.

The Raleigh Police Department (RPD)posted a photo of the five-foot-long reptile on social media, saying the creature had “gotten confused.”

RPD said the iguana was taken to an NC Wildlife Rehabilitation Center.

According to National Geographic, iguanas are among the largest lizards in the Americas, averaging about 8 feet in length and weighing about 10 pounds.

Although iguanas are not native to North Carolina, they are among the most popular reptiles in the United States. National Geographic reports that most captive iguanas die within the first year, but others are often released or given to reptile rescue groups.

The Raleigh Police Department is asking for the public’s help in reporting other sightings of the reptile in the city.
