Memorial Day Traffic 2024: What to Expect

SALT LAKE CITY – Travel experts predict a record number of people will drive to their Memorial Day destinations this year. That means Utah residents will likely encounter some congestion.

The Utah Department of Transportation has urged drivers not to leave Friday between about 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., although delays could last until 8 p.m. in some places.

UDOT spokesperson John Gleason told KSL NewsRadio that they are predicting the following delays on Friday:

  • 25 minutes: SB I-15 in Salt Lake County between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
  • 10 minutes: SB I-15 in the Nephi area of Juab County between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
  • 10 minutes: NB I-15 in Davis County between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
  • 10 minutes: EB Highway 6 in Utah County between 4:00 PM and 8:00 PM.

UDOT also predicted Monday up to 20 minutes of delays on WB Highway 6 from noon to 8 p.m.

They are also predicting delays of more than 10 minutes on NB I-15 around Nephi on Monday from 2 to 7 p.m.

“Take the extra step to plan for some of those delays,” Gleason said. “If you have to be there, understand that everyone else is also trying to reach their destination safely.”

Construction zones

To help ease traffic congestion, UDOT is suspending all construction projects for the holiday weekend, but that doesn’t mean construction zones will go without delays.

The department said drivers may experience delays in the following construction areas:

  • I-15 around 5600 South and Riverdale Road in Weber County.
  • SR-12 near Henrieville.
  • SR-132 near Nephi.
  • SR-24 between I-70 and Hanksville: Drivers using this route to get to or from Lake Powell may experience delays of more than 15 minutes.

“Try to be the type of driver you want others to be towards you,” Gleason said. “Be courteous and understand that there are many people with the same idea.”

Tune in live to KSL NewsRadio on Friday for the latest traffic updates. Additional traffic reporters are available between 12:00 and 19:00 to help you reach your destination.
