Forget Doctor Who, Amazon’s best sci-fi show with Dune Star just returned with season 2

Time travel is one of humanity’s greatest dreams and a classic plot of the sci-fi genre, whose main advantage is its amazing flexibility: the trope can be both the main subject in the show or one of its side elements; it can form the basis of an exciting adventure, but also of a philosophical drama.

On May 16, the second season of a sci-fi series Outer Range that uses the concept of time travel, which many missed the first season, was released on Prime Video.

What is Outer Range about?

As the head of a farming family in rural Wyoming, Royal must manage the land his wife’s family has owned for generations: fending off wealthy neighbors who say they actually own part of the property; comforts his son and granddaughter after his daughter-in-law Rebecca goes missing; and dealing with his wife Cecilia’s faith, which he does not fully share.

And a huge gaping hole has opened up in Royal’s pasture, the origins of which no one, not even Royal himself, knows.

Outer Range is a rare mix of western and science fiction

It may seem like Outer Range is a late answer to Yellowstone, but the Amazon Prime Video project is actually a variation on the rare showdown between Cowboys and Aliens.

Outer Range proves that the tried-and-tested formula of an ordinary character in extraordinary circumstances can thrill a classic Western with witty intrigue. And makes the project, which in terms of setting is reminiscent of a clone of Yellowstone, more of a tribute to Twin Peaks: a mysterious and layered thriller about the vicissitudes of intertemporal travel.

Of course, the typical subplots of the genre are also present here. Neighbors try to take a significant amount of land from Royal’s ranch, and Royal’s adult sons get into trouble with the law. But the most important thing is the main story about the mysterious hole. And the more information is reported about it, the more questions appear in your mind.

On the one hand, Outer Range is an old-fashioned western with cowboy hats, a patriarchal family and rather slow conversations. The mystery of Royal’s childhood, the disappearance of his daughter-in-law, the stunningly beautiful mountain landscapes of Wyoming – these plot points, combined with Josh Brolin’s impressive performance as Royal, are enough to keep the viewer interested.

On the other hand, a supernatural hole in the middle of a field and a mysterious bison with arrows in the side make the formula of this show truly unique.
