Short Pump Apple Store in NJ votes against unionization efforts

An attempt by some employees at an Apple Store in Short Hills, New Jersey to form a union failed in a vote among employees there.

Short Pump Town Center Apple Store Operations Manager John Nagy said Bloomberg those staff there had applied for union representation through the Communication Workers of America on April 8.

The CWA later alleged that the store’s management engaged in illegal anti-union campaigns. She subsequently filed complaints with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).

Following the defeat of the union efforts in an employee vote on May 11, the CWA blamed Apple’s anti-union tactics. Only two Apple Stores have successfully unionized so far.

The NLRB has previously ruled that Apple has engaged in anti-union efforts.

This will be the third Apple Store that has failed to successfully unionize, following failed votes in Atlanta and St. Louis. Apple Penn Square in Oklahoma City has successfully voted to unionize, but has not yet reached a collective bargaining agreement with Apple.

Meanwhile, the Apple Store in Towson Town Center in Maryland, which was already unionized, voted to authorize a strike. The union there complained about unpredictable scheduling practices, wages that lag behind the cost of living and other work-life balance issues.
