Rick Wright’s Greenville Cup win

Rick Wright’s Greenville Triumph defeated South Georgia Tormenta FC 3-2 at home yesterday (May 11) in the second round of the USL Jägermeister Cup.

Lyam MacKinnon opened the scoring for the Triumph in the sixteenth minute; however, the visiting team struck twice before the break in the 33rd and 40th minutes.

Triumph defender Jamie Smith scored twice in the second half, first with a free-kick in the 51st minute and then from the penalty spot in the 67th minute.

Bermuda coach Rick Wright said: “I think the football gods are coming back and helping people who have made a good change.

“We lost the 92nd minute to (Forward) Madison last week and we had a good first half tonight.

“We let off the gas a little bit after our first goal, but went into the locker room and had a really good heart-to-heart with all the guys.

“They came back and showed themselves, and Jamie Smith was incredible.”

A former student at Saltus Grammar School, Wright played for the Bermuda and United States national teams.

He was named Greenville’s head coach at the beginning of the season after previously serving as an assistant coach for several years.
