Richardson’s double Olympic hopes were dashed when Thomas won the 200 meters

Eugene (United States) (AFP) – Sha’Carri Richardson’s dream of an Olympic sprint double ended in disappointment after she could only finish fourth in the 200 meters at the U.S. trials in Eugene, Oregon on Saturday.

Richardson, the reigning world 100m champion, looked set to at least finish in the top three in the 200m after setting a thrilling personal best of 21.92 seconds in Friday’s semi-finals.

However, the Texan, who scorched to victory in last week’s 100m final by booking her ticket to Paris over her desired distance, started poorly in Saturday’s final at Hayward Field, finishing fourth in 22.16 seconds.

The race was won by 2020 Olympic bronze medalist Gabby Thomas, who crossed the line in 21.81 seconds, ahead of 2019 world silver medalist Brittany Brown (21.90 seconds) and McKenzie Long (21.91 seconds).

Thomas, meanwhile, was delighted with a victory that puts her back on track for a possible Olympic 200m title.

“This is incredible,” Thomas said. “I knew I had to be ready today and this is the first step. There is no gold medal in Paris without the team today.”
