Nebraska man suspected of bank robbery in southwest Iowa dies after chase

A 45-year-old Hooper, Nebraska, man suspected of robbing a bank in southwestern Iowa killed himself earlier this week after a police chase, authorities said.

Steven Trent Sapp, 45, died after shooting himself following his alleged robbery of the Iowa State Savings Bank in Lenox, Iowa, the Iowa Department of Public Safety said in a news release.

The incident began Monday around 1:30 p.m. when the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call at the bank. According to reports cited by DPS, Sapp entered the bank, demanded money and then left on a motorcycle.

Law enforcement officers chased Sapp north into Adams County as Sapp allegedly drove at a high rate of speed. The DPS said Sapp lost control of his motorcycle, crashed in a farm field and then fled from police on foot.

As law enforcement officers got closer to Sapp, investigators said he shot himself.

In addition to the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office, the Adams County Sheriff’s Office, the Adair County Sheriff’s Office, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa State Patrol participated in the search and pursuit of Sapp.

Lenox is located about 95 miles southeast of Omaha. Hooper is located about 50 miles northwest of Omaha, or 14 miles north of Fremont.
