GREENWICH, CT – DeCicco & Sons, the New York-based grocery chain with 11 locations in Westchester County, plans to open its first store in Connecticut in the space previously occupied by Stop & Shop in Greenwich’s Glenville neighborhood.

The Greenwich Planning & Zoning Commission will hold a pre-application review of the proposal on Tuesday. The pre-application process generally allows for a non-binding discussion with the committee about the pros and cons of a proposal.

The Glenville Stop & Shop at 21 Glenville St., closed in June 2023.

Last year, at the request of Sutton Land LLC, the property’s owner, the Planning & Zoning Commission rezoned a rear portion of the site to allow for more parking to attract a new grocery store tenant. A site plan was approved to add 61 new parking spaces to the Glenville Plaza shopping center.

“The owner is pleased to announce that a lease has been signed with DeCicco & Sons to open a new store in the mall,” said Thomas J. Heagney, the attorney representing the applicant, in documents filed with the city have been submitted.

As part of the renovation of the existing supermarket space, Heagney says DeCicco & Sons plans to add a new rear entrance, enclosed loading dock and cold storage space to the building.

“As part of creating a rear entrance, a reconfiguration of the rear parking area is also proposed,” Heagney added.

Glenville Plaza has recently seen new tenants move in, with Luca’s Pizzeria and Italian Kitchen and Sweet Notes, an ice cream shop, opening in recent months. Green & Tonic is expected to open at the mall later this year.

DeCicco & Sons was founded in 1973 by John DeCicco Sr., according to the company’s website. The company started as a small supermarket in the Bronx, NY

“For more than 50 years, DeCicco & Sons has had a proud history of offering customers the largest selection of high-quality food with a friendly, personal touch,” according to the company’s website. “This simple, unwavering mentality has allowed the company to expand throughout Putnam and Westchester counties.”

There are now 10 stores open in Westchester in Ardsley, Armonk, Bedford, Brewster, Eastchester, Harrison, Larchmont, Millwood, Pelham and Somers. An eleventh store in Sleepy Hollow is listed as coming soon.

DeCicco & Sons also says on its website that the company is “involved in various civic and community-related events, and regularly collaborates with schools, city organizations, churches and the Chamber of Commerce.”

Tuesday’s Greenwich Planning & Zoning Commission meeting is scheduled for 4 p.m., via Zoom. The agenda and Zoom link can be found here.
