Brief shooting in North Columbus, Ohio on June 23, 2024: What we know

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – Ten people were injured early Sunday morning after a mass shooting in the Short North Arts District near downtown Columbus.

Columbus police said 10 people were shot just before 2:30 a.m. on the 1100 block of North High Street. One of the victims, a man, is in critical condition, while the other nine are in stable condition.

Among the 10 shooting victims, all of whom police said were men, two were juveniles and the remaining eight were adults. CPD said the ages of the victims range from 16 to 27 years old. Police remain at the scene and are conducting their investigation, while North High Street is closed from 5th Avenue to 3rd Avenue.

Columbus Police Sgt. Joe Albert said a male suspect was located by special duty officers immediately after the shooting. A chase ensued with the suspect vehicle going the wrong way on North 4th Street. The car then drove onto I-670 Westbound before police lost the car at the Grandview Avenue exit.

CPD said they identified the suspect vehicle as a white Honda Civic and said anyone with information would contact them.

This is the second time in just over a year that a mass shooting has occurred in the Short North. On May 6, 2023, two simultaneous shootings occurred in which at least ten people were shot, including one person who was shot by an officer.

Eleven firearms were recovered from the May 2023 shootings and none of the officers who shot will be charged. Last year’s mass shooting prompted months of increased security measures.
