Vermont Green wins the first women’s match on penalties

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – The crowd arrived early Saturday and was there all night and went crazy when Neve Renwick scored the first ever goal for the Vermont Green women’s team. FC Laval’s visitors managed to find an equalizer in the 90th minute, but Groen rallied and won it on penalties, sending Virtue Field into a frenzy.

“It feels like women’s football is in a time of explosive growth. To bring a game like this to Vermont with players like this, Vermont Green is already an established club. It’s inspiring to see them and how they value the women’s game and their goals for its future,” said coach and World Cup champion Sam Mewis. “I’m just really humbled and honored to have been a part of it.”

“The community here is crazy, I’m so glad I was here for four days,” said Renwick, originally from England. “I’ve never been to Vermont, and this is crazy. The atmosphere, the people, Vermont is becoming more and more established in women’s sports, this is the place to be.
