People all over the US will soon celebrate Independence Day. While many people choose to enjoy the holidays at home with family and friends by… Barbecue and lighting sparklers, others will celebrate at community events.

Since the 4th of July falls on a Thursday in 2024, making it a long weekend, this is the perfect time to travel. Here are five of the best places to visit for a taste of this quintessential American holiday that celebrates liberty, freedom and the birth of the nation.

The birthplace of freedom: Boston, Massachusetts

Boston is considered the birthplace of the American Revolution and the city really knows how to celebrate Independence Day, it is reported American news and world report. The celebration lasts several days and includes the Boston Harborfest, delicious food and a military band. On July 4, there is a public concert by the Boston Pops that ends with the firing of antique cannons, the ringing of church bells and a fireworks display over the Charles River.

Explore the nation’s capital: Washington DC

Independence Day is celebrated in style in the country’s capital. There will be a parade down Constitution Avenue with bands, drill teams, giant balloons and floats. One of the best places to watch the fireworks is on the National Mall.

There are plenty of other things to do in the country’s capital that weekend, including visiting museums and monuments, enjoying the National Zootake a cruise on the Potomac River, or bike the Mount Vernon Trail (and visit George Washington’s house when you get there).

Let Liberty Ring: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

When it comes to Independence Day, Philadelphia really celebrates, the newspaper said Visit Philadelphia tourist site. After all, this is the birthplace of the nation. There are events over two weeks starting on Juneteenth and culminating on the 4th of July.

In Philly, visit the iconic sites in the city’s historic district, including Independence Hall (tickets required) and the Liberty Bell. The fourth will feature a concert with NE-YO and Kesha on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and a huge fireworks display over the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Go back in time: Williamsburg, Virginia

This capital of colonial Virginia was founded in 1699. A visit to colonial Williamsburg takes you back in time to the events that led to America becoming a nation. According to Colonial Williamsburg website, there is no better place to celebrate the birth of the nation than on Duke of Gloucester Street. Enjoy patriotic festivities including the reading of the Declaration of Independence, musical performances by the Fifes and Drum Corps, and fireworks. You can receive a day ticket free of charge on the website.

Honoring Freedom: New York, New York

What’s more American than a visit to the Big Apple. New York City will be in for a treat Macy’s pyrotechnics were launched from the Hudson River for the first time in more than a decade, U.S. News & World Report reported. This fantastic nighttime show can be viewed from various locations throughout the city and New Jersey.

There are a host of things to do in the city that weekend, including taking a boat trip and visiting the Statue of Liberty. If you want to enjoy summer on the coast, leave Manhattan and stroll the boardwalk on Coney Island or soak up the sun on the beaches of Long Island or Fire Island. Forget your sunshade.
