Morgan County Sheriff’s Office: Stay alert to increasing calls for bail bond scams

MORGAN COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) – The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) is warning people about a growing scam and how to avoid becoming a victim.

The sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post Wednesday that a new bail bond scam is causing increasing problems for residents.

The scam reportedly starts with someone calling posing as a local bond company and requesting money to get a loved one out of jail.

The department noted one telltale sign that a phone call you receive is a scam: if the person asks for money, a credit card, gift cards, or app payments (Cashapp, Vermont, PayPal, etc.) over the phone.

To avoid losing your money, the firm recommends that you:

  • “Verify, verify, verify” before sending money
  • Curd. If it’s important, they’ll contact you
  • Find the company and call the main number listed
  • Don’t take someone’s word for it over the phone, especially if they call out of the blue

MCSO also advises the public to remain alert to avoid losing money.
