2024 June celebrations in Charlotte

This Wednesday is Juneteenth, a holiday commemorating the formal abolition of slavery for the last enslaved people in Texas on June 19, 1865. In 2021, the United States Congress declared Juneteenth a national holiday.

Many events are taking place this weekend and next week to mark the holiday. Here are some that are happening locally.

26th Annual Charlotte Pilgrimage (Now-June 30)

Queen City Tours and Travel organizes the pilgrimage all month long. The tour is 25 miles long and covers 50 historical sites related to Black history in Charlotte. Reservations are required for the tour.

Juneteenth Observation Program (12 June)

Queens University of Charlotte will host its third annual Juneteenth celebration this week at the Levine Center for Wellness and Recreation. The event includes food, entertainment and educational programming. The event is free to the public, but interested parties must register for the event.

The 27th annual Juneteenth Festival of the Carolinas returns to Plaza Midwood this weekend. The event will feature live music performances, food, vendors and more for a three-day celebration. All events this weekend are free.

June celebration (14th of June)

If you want to kick off the weekend’s Juneteenth celebration, the city of Indian Trail is hosting a party at Crossing Paths Park on Friday evening. The celebration will be a day of recognition of the holiday and will also include spoken word, live dance performances and more. The event is free and starts at 6 p.m.

4th annual golf course takeover in June (June 15)

The Greenwood Golf Charities & Day celebration returns this year at Rocky River Golf Club in Concord. The event starts with a golf tournament and the event features a $10,000 hole-in-one competition. Tickets start at $25.

2024 June: Freedom Festival (June 15)

In Concord, the 2024 North Carolina Juneteenth Freedom Festival returns to the Cabarrus Arena and Events Center. With summer temperatures rising, this could be the perfect event for those who want to stay out of the sun. The indoor event will include a playground, basketball, live performances and giveaways. More than 100 Black-owned businesses are expected to attend. The event is free.

Queen City Juneteenth Parade and Cultural Celebration (June 15)

In Charlotte, the third annual Queen City Juneteenth Parade and Cultural Celebration will be held at the Central Piedmont Community College Cato campus on Grier Road. The event will feature floats, dance performances, local vendors and more. The event is free and starts at 9am

Juniteen Jam (June 15)

Juneteenth Jam returns to the Knight Theater in downtown Charlotte with live music, food and live performances. The event is free and starts at 3 p.m

The Charlotte Symphony will host a Juneteenth celebration Sunday in Symphony Park to honor African-American music heritage with works by Scott Joplin and Louis Armstrong led by conductor Christopher James Lees. Adult tickets cost $15 and children under 13 are free with a ticket. The doors open at 5:00 PM and the concert starts at 8:15 PM

Juneteenth in the Gantt (June 19)

In downtown Charlotte, the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture will host Juneteenth at the Gantt beginning at noon. The event will feature a live performance by Leone and the Ascension, art workshops and more. This event is free.
