74-year-old woman comes back to life 2 hours after being declared dead

A 74-year-old woman reportedly came back to life at a funeral home after being declared dead by her nursing home.

Recently, a female senior was declared dead by her nursing home in Nebraska. Two hours later she was found alive in a funeral home. Funeral home workers began CPR and rushed her to a hospital, but she died a few hours later.

The woman, a hospice patient at The Mulberry Nursing Home in Waverly, Nebraska, was pronounced dead on Monday morning (June 3, 2024). The nursing home did not contact the sheriff’s department, which is common in hospice deaths.

Upon arrival at the funeral home, staff discovered the woman was still alive. They immediately began CPR and took her to a hospital in Lincoln. Despite their efforts, she died later that afternoon.

Chief Deputy Ben Houchin of the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident. Sheriff’s Office spokesman Houchin noted there is no initial indication that any laws have been broken. The focus is on understanding how the mistake happened.

“I’m sure the nursing home and everyone else will investigate what happened.” Houchin said.

“And I’m sure they will look at whether new protocols need to be put in place or whether they are all followed.” He added.

Such incidents, while rare, have happened before. In the past 18 months, at least two similar cases have been reported in New York and Iowa, where people pronounced dead were later found alive at funeral homes.

The research continues to ensure that such mistakes are prevented in the future.
