Man armed with gunshot killed by police in Lowe’s parking lot

A Pelham man seen leaving his home with a firearm was confronted Sunday evening in the parking lot of a Lowe’s store in Nashua, N.H., where police twice used non-lethal weapons and a third officer fatally shot him, authorities said Monday .

The man’s name and why Pelham police were involved with him prior to the fatal encounter in Nashua have not been released by Attorney General John M. Formella’s office, which is leading the investigation into the use of deadly violence.

In a statement, Formella’s office said Nashua officers went to the store on Daniel Webster Highway around 8:45 p.m. Pelham police had contacted the man earlier Sunday evening and saw him leaving his home armed.

“Responding officers located this male outside the store armed with a handgun,” the attorney general’s office said. “During the ensuing encounter, two officers ultimately fired less-lethal ammunition, and one officer fired a firearm.”

Life-saving efforts were made at the scene, but the man was pronounced dead outside the store, prosecutors said. The autopsy is scheduled for Monday, prosecutors said.

The man’s name will be released after the autopsy, prosecutors said.

The investigation into the use of deadly force by prosecutors and New Hampshire State Police is ongoing. The names of the officers involved will be released after they are formally interviewed, prosecutors said. The names could be released within 10 days.

“No law enforcement officers were physically injured and there is no threat to the public,” Formella’s office said.
